Archdiocese

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The date of the General Election has been announced. Singaporeans will go to the polls on 11 September, 2015.  Some of you have asked the Church for guidance as we ponder on how to exercise our vote as responsible citizens and Catholics. It behooves us to be aware of the Church’s stand on religion and politics.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in its Doctrinal Note regarding the Participation of Catholics in Political Life states that the primary function of the Church is to instruct and illuminate the consciences of the faithful, particularly those involved in political life, so that their actions may always serve the integral promotion of the human person and the common good.

The just ordering of society or the state is not the central responsibility of the Church. Yet, as citizens of the state, we are called to participate in public life in a personal capacity. These two spheres, religion and politics, though distinct, are interrelated. A good Catholic should also be a good citizen on earth and in heaven.
SFX Bulletin, 18 January 2015  The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord last Sunday brought to a close the season of Christmas and the start of Ordinary Time.   Ordinary Time is not “boring” or “unimportant” as the word “Ordinary” seems to imply.   “Ordinary” is from the Latin root “ordo” from which we get the word “order”.  So Ordinary Time is “ordered time” – the weeks are numbered and the counting reminds us to make progress – to use God’s grace to grow in faith.

God’s grace comes to us principally through the sacraments especially the most Holy Eucharist – the central Christian sacrament. As such, the Sunday gospel for the start of Ordinary Time is rich in Eucharistic undertones.  It is taken from either John the Baptist’s acknowledgement of Jesus as the “lamb of God” (today’s gospel) or Jesus’ first miracle of changing water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana.  Through these two stories, we are invited in Ordinary Time to order our lives around the mystery of the Eucharist and truly dispose ourselves to being the Body of Christ we receive in Holy Communion.
MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD DAY OF PEACE, 1 JANUARY 2015

NO LONGER SLAVES, BUT BROTHERS AND SISTERS

1. At the beginning of this New Year, which we welcome as God’s gracious gift to all humanity, I offer heartfelt wishes of peace to every man and woman, to all the world’s peoples and nations, to heads of state and government, and to religious leaders. In doing so, I pray for an end to wars, conflicts and the great suffering caused by human agency, by epidemics past and present, and by the devastation wrought by natural disasters. I pray especially that, on the basis of our common calling to cooperate with God and all people of good will for the advancement of harmony and peace in the world, we may resist the temptation to act in a manner unworthy of our humanity.

Opening Mass For Year Of Consecrated Life 29-NOV-2014
SCRIPTURE READINGS: ZECHARIAH 2:14-17; MATTHEW 12:46-50

THEME:  REDISCOVERING OUR JOY OF CONSECRATION TO THE LORD

Today, the world has lost direction, meaning and purpose.  This is a fragmented world we are living in as we lack common values and the foundations for building unity.  This is because the world has left God out of the picture as He is absent and no longer felt or experienced.  This has led to agnosticism, secularism, materialism and relativism.  Hence, the thrust of the Universal Church is the work of the New Evangelization.  This is the key to save ourselves and the world.

This call for the New Evangelization was started and initiated by St John Paul II.   What is this New Evangelization?  New Evangelization entails a rediscovery of our faith and the passion for Evangelization.  This call was taken up by Pope Benedict who convoked the synod of the New Evangelization and started a dicastery to deal with the challenges of the New Evangelization.  The synod spells out what the New Evangelization entails.  It begins with an invitation to rediscover and re-appropriate our faith and then to witness the Good news in words and charity.  It requires us to permeate the Christian faith in all areas of life, culture, economy, business, politics, education, family and ecology. Pope Benedict also wrote the apostolic letter on the occasion of the declaration of year of faith.

Guidelines:
1.      In case of emergency calls, the priest who receives the call would go to the hospital or he will look for a replacement.

2.      In principle the parish priests are responsible for the sick within their parish boundaries.

cws walk

It was a Sunday walk with a special significance. It was an event to bring the message to our needy, aged and underprivileged that the community do love and care for them.

The two-kilometre walk organised by Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) was held on Oct 28, and attracted some 500 people. Among them were volunteers, donors and residents from the three nursing homes under CWS – St Joseph’s Home, St Theresa’s Home and Villa Francis Home For The Aged – as well as St Vincent Home, a shelter home set up by CWS for people needing public assistance.

Three members of Roses of Peace, a nationwide initiative which aims to build bridges across faith communities in Singapore, presented Archbishop William Goh with a special “Letter of Peace” on the occasion of Lent and Easter.

Mr Mohamed Irshad, founder and president of the initiative, together with Mr Wan Muhammad Fazlan Nordin and Ms Noor Hanisah Binte Noordin, visited Archbishop Goh at his residence on March 2 and presented him with a “Letter of Peace to all Christians in Singapore”.

The letter, which was also emailed to Singapore Christian leaders including Catholic priests, conveys the group’s gratitude to “our beloved Christian friends, leaders, and members of the community who have sacrificed their time and energy to spread the message of love across the nation”.

For decades, Andrew Goh has been using dialects to teach the faith to the elderly. Annabelle Liang catches up with him.

Come rain or shine, Mr Andrew Goh mounts his maroon scooter to perform his daily mission.

For the past 24 years, the 80-year-old has been teaching the Catholic faith to elderly and sick people in the comfort of their own homes or in groups at churches.

“All the young people go to RCIA [Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults] classes,” said the seasoned catechist. “Nobody works with the elderly. They are neglected.”

Mr Goh, who introduces the faith to these people upon request, is multilingual. He converses and prays with his students in English, Mandarin, and the Peranakan, Hokkien, Hainanese, Teochew and Cantonese dialects.

THE people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has dawned (Isaiah 9:2).

Is this not true for us today? We are ever more connected via social media and the internet, yet broken relationships are on the rise and more people feel alone and alienated. The recent US elections and Brexit have also demonstrated undercurrents of division in First World Nations.

APPOINTMENTS

  1. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei has elected Archbishop William Goh DD to the following offices for the term of 2017-2018:

    a. Honorary Secretary of the Bishops' Conference.
    b. President for the Commission for Consecrated Life.
    c. President for the Commission for Apostleship of the Sea.

  2. Fr Nithiya Sagayaraj, a priest from the Diocese of Thanjavur has been appointed as Parish Assistant to the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes for a term of two [2] years with effect from 1 June 2016.
It is believed that recently until June 2016, an Indian national and layperson named Francis George Thomas had been exercising a “charismatic healing ministry” and accepting donations of money at various locations around the Archdiocese of Singapore. This was one of many visits he has made here, and may make more. During such visits he has also been known to sell his own religious-themed books and music CDs.

Mr. Thomas does not have the customary approval of the Catholic authorities in the diocese from which he originates. Bishop Stanley Roman of the Diocese of Quilon in Kerala states that he has not recommended him for any purpose. Nor has Mr. Thomas appear to have ever obtained his permission to address a Catholic assembly, or had approval for preaching from any ecclesiastical authority.
Archbishop William Goh DD will be away in Krakow, Poland, from 19 July to 3 August 2016. His Grace will be leading the Singapore Archdiocesan contingent to World Youth Day (WYD) 2016. The delegation leaves tonight.

WYD is a time of celebration with the Holy Father. Thousands of young people around the world come together to experience for themselves the universality of the Church through prayer and the sacraments. It is traditionally held every three years in a different country. This will be the 14th International World Youth Day since the event was inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1986.

Please be advised that one Stephanie Kathleen Culhane was mentioned in a Memorandum dated 3 June 2009 from the Diocese of San Bernardino that she uses the name Sister Stephen Culhane and had been soliciting donations and loans for her "mission" in the region. Some of the loans had been for tens of thousands of dollars. Ms. Culhane had told people that she is a Franciscan sister and regularly dresses like a member of the Franciscan Order.

The Memorandum also stated that at that time, the Diocese of San Bernardino had no evidence that she was a member of any order of women religious that was recognized by the Roman Catholic Church.

Chancery had emailed the Office of the Chancellor, Diocese of San Bernardino and had received a reply that to-date, there have not been any changes to the status of Stephanie Kathleen Culhane.

OBITUARY

Sr Jean Marie Andrews, FMDM
of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood in Singapore passed away on 17 March 2016. She was 85.

Sr Jean Marie was born in Penang, Malaysia on 29 October 1930 as the elder of twin girls in a family of seven children. The young Jean Marie was an excellent sportswoman who was a sprinter with the Penang Athletic Association and played for the state’s hockey team.

At 21, Sr Jean Marie first felt God’s call to religious life when she joked about joining the ‘nuns in Singapore who could drive’, since she loved to drive. Although she had no real intention of joining the FMDM then, she felt a constant restlessness until she finally announced to the Lord, “Lord, if this is what you want, I surrender!” Sr Jean Marie joined the FMDM as a postulant in 1953 and made her first profession in 1956.

After her profession, Sr Jean Marie was trained as a radiographer in the Royal Northern Hospital, London. She qualified in 1958, moved to Singapore and worked at the Rotary Club X-Ray Department attached to Tan Tock Seng Hospital until Mount Alvernia Hospital was built in 1961. She made her final profession in the same year. At Mount Alvernia Hospital, Sr Jean Marie established the Radiography department, operating the machines, developing and processing hundreds of x-rays while handling other administrative duties and being ready to dash off as an ambulance driver when needed.
