SINGAPORE – Father Bruno Saint Girons will be continuing his study of the Tamil language at Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (OLL) at Ophir Road. The 36-year-old priest of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP) was attached to Church of the Holy Trinity before he went to India in August 2006 to study Tamil. He returned last November for health reasons, possibly affected also by the food that he ate in his time at a village near Pondicherry where he spent a year.

The MEP already had plans for Father Bruno to learn Tamil when they first sent him here in August 2004.

"All MEP priests have a tradition to learn a local language," Father Bruno explains. "It’s one of the ways we can better understand the [local] culture and to dialogue with the people from their own experience."

He will continue his studies with private tutors at OLL parish "because it’s a Tamil-speaking church" with a Tamil environment.

"I’m going there as a student, not as an assistant priest, though I will help of course," he adds.

"I think it’s good (to study at OLL) because it’s easy to meet people and speak Tamil there."
