SINGAPORE – The IJ Choristers from CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) attained the Gold Award in Category A1 Children’s Choir (age 12 and under) at the July 14-17 Hong Kong International Youth & Children’s Choir Festival. They topped that category and won the title "Champion of Category A1".

The 42 girls are aged 9-12.

"Being the girls’ first foray in an international choral competition, we were naturally a little nervous because our competitors from China, Philippines and even our own Singapore schools, were very good. Victory was sweet because of the stiff competition," said choral director and instructor Lim Bee Na.

The choir sang three songs for their adjudication – "Mouse Madrigal", "I Dance to the Stars and Moon", and "Bengawan Solo".

"Begawan Solo" was specially arranged for the choir by Bang Wenfu, a renowned Singapore music composer. It was this piece that proved to be the winning song for the IJ Choristers at the Finalists’ Night concert.

Exposure in international arts festivals is part of the IJ Arts Exposure Programme.
