Parishioners today expect their priest to be more than just efficient and good in organising activities. They are also looking for someone who is forgiving, tolerant and merciful.

This was the solemn message from Archbishop William Goh in his homily to celebrate the ordination to the priesthood of Deacon Stanley Goh, SJ on Jan 28, 2021 at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd.

“Following the example of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, you must be compassionate and flexible when exercising your ministry,” said His Grace. “People today need to feel that they are loved, forgiven and accepted.” He also highlighted another form of mercy that is needed – mercy in integrity. “We must lead an exemplary life – practising what we preach and giving glory to God in all that we do.”

On having his only child become a priest, Mr Sebastian Goh prays that his son will remain humble and joyful. With tears welling in his eyes, he said, “My wife and I are proud of him, and we’re very grateful that God has chosen him.”
