Fr Paul Tay (1933-2017)

Fr Paul Tay Chin Hak, a diocesan priest in Singapore passed away on 26 December 2017. He was 84.

Fr Tay was born in Singapore on 8 February 1933. He studied at Holy Innocents’ School before entering the major seminary College General, in Penang. Fr Tay was ordained a priest on 29 May 1960. He was posted to St Michael’s Church as an assistant parish priest in 1962, and then as a parish priest in the Church of St Teresa from 1972 to 1979. He also served in St Joseph’s Church (Bukit Timah), Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, and in parishes in Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Muar.

In 1988, he was put in charge of building the Church of the Holy Trinity in Tampines. Fr Tay was instrumental in designing the church building and worked out of a rental flat in Tampines to build up both the physical parish and its communities. He served as parish priest until 2002, after which he became parish priest of the Church of the Sacred Heart. During his term at Sacred Heart, he renovated the church which was nearly a century old and built a new community building for the parish. Fr Tay celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a priest in 2010 and retired in late 2014.

Fr Tay’s wake is currently held at 20 Sunbird Circle, Singapore 487264. There will be nightly prayers at 8.00 PM and 9.00 PM.

His casket will arrive at the Church of the Holy Trinity on 31 December 2017 (Sunday) at 1.00 PM, where it will remain in the main church until the next day. His Grace Archbishop William Goh will preside and preach at the Mass for Fr Tay.
