WE refer to the article “AIDS & condoms” which was published in the Dec 21 and 28 issue of CN. We are concerned that it may have caused some confusion amongst Catholics as it appeared to give the impression that there is no consensus by the Magisterium on the subject.

Contrary to what is stated in the article, the Holy Father and senior Church officials have publicly stated on innumerable occasions their objections to the use of condom as a means to prevent the transmission of AIDS.
I REFER to “It’s Christmas. Let’s help the poor” (page 12 of CN Dec 21 and 28).

While I applaud the effort made by the Catholic News to help the poor, I would like to point out that the Vatican has suspended its symbolic contribution to UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) and UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in view of the two organisations support of contraception and abortion. The Holy See’s stance was expressed by His Emminence Mgr. Jean-Louis Tauran when he wrote on the Defence of Life in the Context of International Policies and Norms on 11 February 2000. (Please refer to the Vatican website: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/secretariat_state/documents/rc_seg-st_doc_20000211_tauran-acdlife_en.html).

Therefore, I think it would be inappropriate for a Catholic newspaper to promote monetary contribution to an organisation which may act contrary to Catholic beliefs.
