Throughout history, humankind has asked itself: What is a meaningful life?
In Singapore, many people answer this question in terms of possessing biological health and material wealth. We pour our greatest energy into securing a sizeable income, and we seem to derive great satisfaction when we are engaged in the act of buying or selling something. We also invest a great deal into preserving our bodily wellness.
There is practical wisdom in having these priorities, and making a living is one of the primary ways Catholics strive for holiness.
However it would be short-sighted to build our lives only around these things. Our bodies are mortal, and our earthly wealth is but temporary. Moreover, the material world cannot and will not supply a vision beyond itself, a vision that we need in order to attain the full meaning of what it is to be a human being.

Twins: One aborted, one survived! The survivor speaks...
Forty-two years ago, my mother decided to have an abortion. She was pregnant with twins, but nobody knew this, not even her doctor. My tiny brother and I were growing in her womb, until that dreadful day. Before the abortion, we were both alive. But in a matter of moments, I was alone.
It’s frightening to think I was almost aborted when my mom had a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) abortion, a process in which my mother’s cervix was dilated and the lining and contents of the uterus was surgically removed by scraping and scooping. Somehow, miraculously, I survived the procedure. My twin brother Andrew, however, wasn’t so lucky. He was aborted and we lost him forever.

The Carmelite novitiate in Hsinchu City, Taiwan.
Carmelite Fr Thomas Lim, General Delegate for the Taiwan-Singapore General Delegation, told CatholicNews that “a novitiate house was built and given to us by a benefactor in Taiwan”.
According to Fr Lim, the move to Taiwan is to provide novices and postulants “an environment to discern their calling, especially in novitiate, where they need to have a very strong grounding in Carmelite life”.
