SINGAPORE - About 400 members of the Peranakan community joined Father Alfred Chan at an 11pm Chinese New Year's eve Mass at Church of the Holy Family.

Most of them were from the Katong area and they  showed up in Peranakan outfits. "It is so wonderful to see especially the little kids in these outfits," Lawrence Seet, chairman of the organising team remarked.

Mass was celebrated in the Peranakan patois. The occasion also marked the 25th anniversary of the community. Father Chan is the founder priest of the Peranakan group.

"It is nice to have him back for our 25th anniversary," Mr Seet said; he was especially pleased since Father Chan had been ill for some time.

During the Offertory, symbolic food and flowers and a white dove were presented. The  dove was released outside thechurch after the Offertory.
