Young Catholics from Blessed Sacrament Church ushered in the new year with a bang with their Lodestar Countdown event.
The night of fun and entertainment, held in the church’s Damien Hall, included a band competition and aimed to reach out to the young at heart across Singapore.
Parish priest Fr Anthony Hutjes opened the evening with a reminder to the 90-strong crowd to look to 2013 as a God-filled year and to live it meaningfully.
Tacet, a band made up of teachers, led the praise and worship, followed by dance and music performances by young people.
The highlight of the evening was the Battle of the Bands, which saw The Roon and Ashdown, the two finalists, pitting their skills against each other.
Each had to perform a cover song and an original composition.
The Roon, a four-man band, performed a Feeling Good/Mercy mashup cover by Michael Buble and Duffy. Their original composition was delivered in a soulful and electrifying style.
On the other hand, Ashdown’s original number was edgy and had lots of raw energy. The band, formed in 2007, describes its music style as alternative/punk.
The judges and audience then voted for their favourite band and the winner was Ashdown.
All participants then sang and danced to welcome the new year on the stroke of midnight. They later closed the event with a prayer and lifted 2013 to God.
