SINGAPORE – One hundred and seventy-two youth from 37 youth groups in 25 parishes in the archdiocese, including several participants from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, and two seminarians, gathered together on Dec 15-16 for an illuminating experience at Church of St. Teresa. The ‘I.luminate’ Leaders for Christ Convention 2007 drew leaders, service team members and potential leaders from youth and young adult ministries to attend the weekend of talks, workshops, sharing of experiences and networking.

Organized by SACCRE Youth, the youth wing of the Singapore Archdiocese Catholic Charismatic Renewal (SACCRE), the convention sought to help existing and aspiring youth and young adults embrace aspects of ministry that help to grow, enrich and sustain community life.

Organizers also hoped that the convention would serve as a platform for the learning and sharing of experiences in youth and young adult ministry, and to build a network among the leaders in youth ministry in both parishes and tertiary institutes.

SACCRE Youth managed to pack 26 sessions of talks and workshops into one busy weekend by holding simultaneous workshops, so that participants could attend the workshops that they were most interested in.

Alwyn Ng, a youth lector from the parish of the Nativity of the BVM found the convention to be "very well-organized", that the logistics were "smoothly handled", and the "speakers were well-chosen who shared very passionately with participants".

Clement Chua, from Acts II in the parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary commented, "I’d like to see the priests involved in this. We need the priests in the parishes to see the same vision as us, young people of the church."

Youth chaplain Father Brian D’Souza and Edwyn de Souza from the Youth Ministry Office led the time of prayer and Eucharistic adoration on the evening of the first day, while Archbishop Nicholas Chia presided over the Eucharistic celebration on the second day. -By Daniel Tay
