Four musicians from different religious backgrounds are working together to stage a concert for ACMI

SINGAPORE – Four musicians from different faith backgrounds are pooling their talents for an Advent concert of sacred songs to spread Christmas cheer while also raising funds for the Archdiocesan Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ACMI).

Speaking to CatholicNews after a rehearsal, Teng Xiang Ting, a law undergraduate, and who helps train and conduct the National Junior College and CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School (SNGS) choirs, said that she is glad that she is able to lend her voice to something meaningful.

“It’s for a worthy cause. And it’s for Christmas,” said Ms Teng who sings soprano.

Although Ms Teng professes to be a free thinker, the ex-SNGS alumnus and choir member finds no difficulty performing in a Catholic church. The fundraiser is to be held at the Church of St Vincent de Paul on Dec 10 evening.

Dr Seah Kar Heng, an engineering professor at the National University of Singapore who conducts and plays with the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra, said he is encouraged that the funds raised will go towards ACMI.

“These are people the Lord wants us to look after,” said Dr Seah, a Methodist, who will be playing the flute and violin. He is also involved with his church’s ministry in reaching out to Chinese migrant workers.

Dorothy Chia, a master’s graduate in music who plays the organ and piano, added that the concert is a good way to use her talents.

“I didn’t look for the opportunity… it just plonked on me. So there must be a God-directed motive,” said Ms Chia, a Catholic.

Engineering undergraduate Matthew Chua who sings baritone and performs with the Singapore Lyric Opera conceived the fundraiser.

The four musicians will be performing together for the first time.

Themed Joy to the World, the concert will feature pieces such as Pie Jesu, Schubert’s Ave Maria, The Lord’s Prayer, O Holy Night, The Prayer and others.

The concert will be held on Dec 10 at the Church of St Vincent de Paul at 8 pm. Tickets at $16 are available through SISTIC outlets and also online.
