SINGAPORE – Apart from recognising academic excellence, CHIJ Katong Convent (KC) handed out five special awards to its graduating class of 2009 in the school’s Eighth Speech and Prize-Giving Day held Apr 10 in honour of these students’ outstanding achievements.
These included the KC Integrity award which exemplifies the values of integrity, nobility, teamwork, excellence, graciousness, respect, independence and yeomanship; the Minnie D’Rozario Sports Award for sporting and teamwork excellence; the Blessed Barre Award for IJ and leadership qualities; the Marie Bong Literature Award for the most outstanding Literature in English student; and lastly the Sister Finnbar Award to the most outstanding all-rounder in the school.
Winning the Marie Bong Award this year is Allyson Marie Bong, the granddaughter of Mrs Marie Bong, the Katong Convent principal (1972-1986) after whom this award is named. The late principal promoted a love for literature and drama in the school.
Literature teacher Mrs Teo Hui Ling said that the young Ms Bong’s “dedication to the school’s drama club”, her Literature grades, and her “persistent pursuit of Drama studies beyond the classroom and school” proved her worthiness of being a “true blue and timeless KC Literature student”.
