New Year Celebration at the Church of our Lady Of Sorrows, Penang.

On Sunday, February 3rd. the Eve of the Chinese New Year, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was given at the Church of Our Lady Of Sorrows at 5.30 p.m., during which the Psalm Miserere and the Te Deum were chanted to beg pardon of God for all sins committed, and to thank Him for all graces and benefits received during the past year.

The Church was tastefully decorated for the New Year with flags and banners. The Main Altar was resplendent with lights and beautiful flowers. In fact, everyone and everything around bore signs of unspeakable joy and brightness.

On New Year day the Church was packed at an early hour although the service was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. The Rev. Father R. de Souza officiated at the High Mass which was melodiously rendered by Mr. Joachim Lean Chong Hin and his choristers. This unique success reflects much credit on the indefatigable zeal of our veteran choir-master and on the whole-hearted co-operation of the choristers. The Mass used for the occasion was that of St. Teresa in two parts by J. Wosendorfers.

Mr. Louis Lim's Orchestra is to be congratulated on the beautiful melodies rendered. The Chinese New Year would be a dull one without it. May it be remarked here that this Orchestra is an Amateur one, and the success it achieved was mainly due to the untiring efforts of Mr. Louis Lim the conductor, Mr. Lim is a professional attached to the Runnymede Hotel.

At the Communion, it was an edifying sight to see so many approaching the Holy Table, and receiving wih great fervour their Eucharistic Lord and King. The distribution of Holy Communion alone, lasted for nearly half an hour, so great was the number of communicants. It was not before 9.15 a.m. that the service was brought to a close.

In the Church compound one can imagine the hearty shaking of hands, and the reciprocal meetings among friends of: " KEONG HEE FUT CHOY." The parochial house was besieged, after Mass, bv numerous well-wishers who had come to extend their heartv greetings to their beloved Pastor and Friend. This duty of filial piety rendered, the whole congregation dxsnersed to their respective homes where, we may be sure, they had a JOLLY GOOD TIME.
