SINGAPORE – A roadshow organized by the seminary and Serra Club of Singapore at Church of the Holy Cross was held from Aug 1-3. It is one of the events leading to the St. Francis Xavier (SFX) Major Seminary Silver Jubilee Celebrations on Dec 1.
The first roadshow was held at Church of the Holy Trinity in May.
The roadshow started in the evening of Aug 1 with Holy Hour to pray for more vocations, and for our priests and seminarians.
Before the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a first year seminarian, Brother Cornelius Ching, shared about how his first seven months as a seminarian has made him appreciate life more. Living with a group of men under one roof has not been easy, he said. But then there are compensations, such as, the privilege to praise God first thing in the morning in a community and to praise God as the last thing of the day, he added. He admitted he has given up a lot – a good career, a steady girlfriend, etc – but he had felt strangely empty till he decided to join the seminary and has since gained much more in return.
On Saturday and Sunday, the parish was abuzz with an exhibition featuring the history of the SFX Major Seminary and the seminarians’ formation process. Seminarians were present to answer queries from the parishioners. They also enlightened the youth about life in the seminary and what it takes to be a seminarian.
After each Mass, the seminarians were on hand to give out colourful balloons and badges with the words "I love Jesus and His Priests" to the children.
Father Kenson Koh, Chairman of the SFX Major Seminary 25th Anniversary Celebrations Organising Committee and seminary formator encouraged parishioners to not just pray for priests but be an example to priests too. Just as the lay people look to priests for spiritual inputs towards holiness, priests look to lay people for encouragement and inspiration in their spiritual lives, he said. He exhorted all to do their part to encourage priestly vocations.
The SFX Major Seminary had no new seminarians last year, and only two this year.
