A 1945 photograph shows female survivors in cramped cells at the Nazis’ Auschwitz death camp. The Soviet army entered Auschwitz on Jan 27, 1945, liberating more than 7,000 prisoners. According to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, an estimated 1.3 million people were deported to Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945; of those, at least 1.1 million were killed. 


An inscription is seen engraved into a stone set in the Holocaust Memorial Garden in Hyde Park in London. Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated internationally on Jan 27, the anniversary of the date of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. CNS photos
