SINGAPORE - Family Life Society commissioned a second batch of 15 lay counsellors on Aug 5 at Church of St. Vincent de Paul.  Having undergone a one-year course, these lay counsellors are ready to be deployed in parishes to provide a listening ear to those who may find life difficult or confusing.

In his homily, Jesuit Father Charles Sim, president of FLS and course director, emphasized the importance of a warm and compassionate human presence. Recalling his experience in the Philippines when Mt. Pinatubo erupted, Father Charles remarked that a critical factor which helped the Filipino people to stay strong and recover from this tragedy was the fact that they comforted each other with assurances of God's continued care, and helped each other with whatever they had.

New lay counsellor Leny Januar, 42, hoped that the skills she has acquired can be used "for those who approach us for help".

Counselling is now available at the following churches: Holy Family, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, St. Anne's, St. Vincent de Paul, Risen Christ, St. Bernadette, St. Anthony, St. Francis of Assisi, Blessed Sacrament, St. Joseph (Bukit Timah), and also at CANA The Catholic Centre.
