"The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." - Lk 10:2

Inspired by this verse, the Harvesters community was formed in 1994 as a Catholic Bible Study group for Young Adults. Today, the Harvesters is a Bible-based faith-sharing community that seeks to inspire, empower and support Catholic young adults in living out the Gospel. We are lay people under the spiritual direction of Father Adrian Yeo and our aim is to transform the world for Christ, rooted in Scripture and the church's teachings.

Right, some of the Harvesters 'break bread' together at a retreat.

Our community of about 20 people meets every Thursday evening for Bible study and faith-sharing. We use various Catholic Bible-study materials including the Little Rock Scripture Study programme and Scripture from Scratch, which range from six to 10 weeks in duration. For many, being in the Harvesters is their first experience of Catholic Bible study.

"I never thought that I was a Bible study type of person, nor did I ever think how it could ever help to improve my life," says Ann Marie Lim, a public relations coordinator who has been with the Harvesters for eight years. "Having a community like the Harvesters to journey with me in this endeavour is also such a great blessing as we learn not only from the Word but from each other as well."

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." - Heb 4:12

Bible study for the Harvesters is not just about understanding Scripture better, but more importantly, it is about applying Scripture to our lives. We want to be informed and transformed by Scripture.

As Sandra Lim, a lawyer in her 30s, shares, "Since I joined Harvesters, the Bible has taken on a new meaning in my life. It has truly become the living word in my daily life especially in guiding and helping me through the many trials and tribulations I have experienced."

Community plays a big part for the Harvesters. It can be challenging for Catholics to live out our Christian values in the world. The Harvesters provides young working Catholics with a faith community that supports them in their faith journeys.

"Sharing Scripture with fellow Harvesters has given me a deeper understanding of what it means to be Catholic and to have a spiritual life. I have come to realize many answers to the trials faced in my personal, work and family life can be found in Scripture reflections," says Adelaine Ng, an IT specialist who joined four years ago.

The Harvesters also organize events aimed at promoting Catholic community and deepening young adults' understanding and appreciation of Holy Scripture. Over the years, we have organized retreats, talks, carolling and community outreaches. Most recently, we organized the One People: Many Tents fair on Jun 9 that saw nine Young Adult and Third Order communities come together to promote their activities.

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." - Ps 119:105

The vision of the Harvesters is to see Catholic young adults alive in their faith, knowledgeable about Scripture and the Catholic faith, and actively involved in building God's Kingdom on earth. To this end, the Harvesters is organizing our first-ever Bible Weekend on Jul 14-15. Speakers from the Apostolate for Catholic Truth (ACT) and Father J. J. Fenelon will be at this two-day event at Montfort Centre to help Catholics understand the Bible better, and equip Catholics to apply Scripture to their daily lives so we can have "life to the full" (Jn 10:10) and be "salt" and "light" to the world. (Matt 5:13-16)

Pope John Paul II in his Apostolic Letter "On the Coming of the Third Millennium" said, "In order to recognize who Christ truly is, Christians... should turn with renewed interest to the Bible... In the revealed text it is the Heavenly Father himself who comes to us in love and who dwells with us disclosing to us the nature of his only-begotten Son and his plan of salvation for humanity."

We invite you then to come and experience the Lord in his Living Word!
