SINGAPORE - The 17th School of Evangelization of the New Evangelization Team (NET) concluded in June, after a duration of 20 months. A Commissioning Mass was held at Church of St. Bernadette on Jun 14 with Archbishop Nicholas Chia presiding. After Communion, he conferred his special blessings on the 37 Catholics who had been receiving formation though NET.
Right, Gordon Kong, one of 37 NET graduates, receives his certificate from Archbishop Nicholas Chia.
Thomas Yeo, one of the 37, said, "While the formation in NET has enriched me tremendously, I realize that this is only the first step." Many of the ladies were emotional.
In his homily, Archbishop Chia said, "We are church and the hallmark of being church is that it is holy, catholic and apostolic. Our late pope (John Paul II) reminded us that to be church, we must also be missionary. This is within the vision of NET - to make Christ known to others."
Archbishop Chia explained: All of us are called to be disciples, and discipleship means "To Come", and "To Go". We come to Christ in order to have a relationship with him, and we do this by focusing on our prayer life, reading Scripture, and receiving the sacraments.
All Catholics are commissioned "to go" be missionaries by our baptism and confirmation. We go to Sunday Catholics and lapsed Catholics who are living in darkness, by praying for them, reaching out to them, and sharing the Good News with them, not just by word of mouth, but by our life example. Archbishop Chia also exhorted the NETters to put in efforts to reach out to the marginalized and those who don't know Christ. He concluded by thanking God for the gift of these 37 NET graduates.
After Mass, there was a celebratory dinner in the parish hall. The next NET School of Evangelization begins Sep 27. For enquiries, please call 9324 0471 or visit the NET website at www.catholicacma.org.sg/NET.
