SINGAPORE - It has come to the attention of the Prioress of the Carmelite Convent, Mother Josephine of Mary, that certain individuals and groups are raising funds for the renovation of the old Carmelite Monastery at Bukit Teresa without the expressed permission of the Sisters.
CatholicNews carried an article titled "Beware! Here's another scam" in its Dec 24, 2006 issue, which informed readers that the Carmelite Community of Singapore had advised that it had not made an online appeal for donations. The article advised that the public should not entertain requests for donations from anyone professing to be acting on behalf of the Carmelite community. Better still, alert the Carmelite community, it said.
The Sisters emphasize again that they have not granted permission to anyone for such fundraising activities and they do not intend to raise money in this way.
Anyone wishing to make a donation should either hand-deliver it to the community at the St. Francis Xavier Major Seminary Block 'B', where they have moved temporarily as the monastery at Bukit Teresa is being repaired and altered; or by post (crossed cheques only, made payable to Carmelite Monastery) to: The Carmelite Sisters, Carmelite Monastery, 98 Bukit Teresa Road, Singapore 099750.
