Visitors to the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary get an explanation of symbols on the altar.

For a group of visitors who had never stepped into the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a tour of the sanctuary was more than just sight-seeing.

It was for them to find out more about the Catholic faith as part of an evangelising effort organised by the parish.

The participants were invited to visit the church as part of a Christmas carolling effort at Heartland Mall and NEX in Serangoon Central, where parishioners distributed the invite flyers to the public. The outreach effort also saw volunteers going around the neighbouring streets and blocks to distribute flyers.

Ministry members from the RCIA, RCIY, Alpha and Chinese Apostolates and many parishioners then came together to conduct the tours during the parish’s Family Fiesta, an outreach event on Dec 30.

They shared the story of God’s salvation and mercy through the various religious statues, explained the 14 Stations of the Cross and confession rooms. Seeing the baby Jesus in the Christmas crib also captured the hearts and imagination of guests.

Both Chinese and English-speaking tours were well received. There was a steady stream of more than 150 guests who signed up.

Many finished the tour and sat through the five-minute question-and-answer session where they were encouraged to find out more about the faith. Some signed up immediately for Alpha or RCIA to be held later in this year, while others asked questions about the faith.

This is the second time the parish has held this fiesta and the first that such outreach tours have been held.

The parish wanted to use the fiesta as an opportunity to be an evangelising church that brings the Word of God to all. n
