The Archdiocesan Biblical Apostolate organised a retreat cum workshop for coordinators of parish Biblical Apostolate teams (BATs) on April 1.

The event, led by Verbum Dei Srs Sandra Seow and Leticia Candelario Lopez, saw 30 participants from various parishes come together at the Catholic Archdiocesan Education Centre.

Sr Sandra and Sr Leticia are respectively the director and associate director of the Archdiocesan Biblical Apostolate.

Titled Role of BAT: Disciples of the Word, the event was part of the apostolate’s outreach to gather BAT coordinators from the different parishes to be renewed in their role as well as create a space for them to share experiences and challenges.

The day started with an hour of praying the Word of God followed by Sr Leticia giving an input to participants about the need to be disciples who listen and put the Bible into practice. “We need to give God’s word to those around us,” she said. “However, we first must learn to listen and put His word into practice.”

Sr Sandra conducted a workshop which reminded participants of the spiritual dimension of their ministry. “It is not just to organise talks or conduct Bible studies or even to be concerned with the quantity of participants coming for various activities, but to be bridges for people to encounter Christ through Scripture,” she said.

“We need to be BATs with clear intention to facilitate that living encounter as well as to be creative in reaching out to active Catholics as well as inactive Catholics,” she said.

Participants were then divided into groups, made up of representatives from different parishes, to discuss their goals as well as share ideas and ways to reach out to parishioners.

Ms Lene Lee, a coordinator from the Church of Christ the King, said: “This session provided us an opportunity to understand the obstacles we face in our ministry, which is how to get more Catholics to read the Bible. The chance to meet the BAT coordinators from other parishes is helpful as we can harness our limited resources and implement activities for the good of the parish communities.”

Mr Irving Teo, from the Church of St Bernadette, shared, “This has been a very useful time. It is a good reminder that we are called to make time each day to encounter Jesus through the Word of God.”

The Archdiocesan Biblical Apostolate is organising a Bible Sunday Seminar called “Listeners of the Word, Prophets of Today” on July 8. For more information, visit http://biblicalapostolate.catholic.sg/
