KC.jpgSINGAPORE - For the students of Katong Convent (KC) who graduated in 1956, 50 years marks a milestone of friendships that have lasted really for 60 years, from the time they were six years old and in Primary One. This Jun 1, the KC Class of '56 will reunite at Serangoon Gardens Country Club, some flying in from Sydney and Holland.

Right, From left, Joyce, Jennie, Carol, Gek Suan, Irene, Luanne and Christine make final arrangements over lunch for their Class Reunion on June 1. Irene and Joyce work at the Holy Trinity Parish every Friday, setting up the canteen for Sundays and Luanne is a catechist at the Church of St. Ignatius.

For the students of Katong Convent (KC) who graduated in 1956, 50 years marks a milestone of friendships that have lasted really for 60 years, from the time they were six years old and in Primary One. What unite them are friendship and memories of how growing up in a convent was like back then, the organizers shared. "During our time, moral or ethics teachings were very strict," Jennie Khoo recalled.

"We also had classes like home-nursing and First Aid… and these are all part of caring," Luanne Lim added.

"We learnt to uphold certain values like integrity and loyalty, which helped us to grow together," said Joyce Pereira.

They agreed that stronger bonds were fostered in the past because of these factors and because classes used to be smaller. "We stayed together all the way… we were never streamed into different classes," Gek Suan said.

The group had stayed in touch throughout the last 50 years. Last year, realising that 2006 would be the 50th year since they graduated from KC, the ladies decided to commemorate the anniversary. A "tremendous effort" was made to reconsolidate contacts. Out of two classes of about 80 students in total, the organizing group is expecting about 50 to turn up.

Jun 1 promises to be an afternoon of fun. Aside from recitals and songs from the 50's, everyone is invited to a "one-minute moment" where they can "Share and Tell" about their lives since their KC days.

The organizers are appealing for any other students from the Katong Convent Class of 1956 whom they have been unable to contact, to come to this reunion. For further inquiries, contact Irene (9829 4749), Carol (6280 7847) or Joyce (6242 5453).
