Immediately after the Reds take over control of any country they are so polite and obliging that many people, even Catholics who should know better, are led to believe they can live on good terms with them, or even co-operate with them. Profiting by the experience of China, let's not have any illusions of this sort in Malaya. We and the Communists hold quite different ideas about truth, about God and religion. We are faced with two conceptions of man and society that are diametrically opposed, and which cannot co-exist for long. Therefore, there is urgent need for every Christian, every Catholic, to understand Communist tactics and not allow himself to be hood winked even for a time by Red promises.
The following are some of the principal Red objections against the Church that have been hurled against Catholics in China.
They have been gathered from the personal experience of three China missionaries who lived under the Reds for some years and who had questions such as these thrown at them day after day. Familiarize yourself with both the difficulties and the solutions, and you won't be taken by surprise if one day you should be standing before a Red tribunal yourself.
I. THE CHURCH INSTEAD OF HELPING THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT TO LIBERATE THE PEOPLE OPPOSES IT.
A. The Church never opposes any just measure that will help the people. She is anxious to live at peace with any government that will respect her basic rights and leave her the liberty necessary to carry on her supernatural mission of spreading the Gospel of Christ.
II. THE CHURCH WHILE PRETENDING TO BE A PURELY RELIGIOUS SYSTEM IS ALWAYS INTERFERING IN POLITICS.
A. The Church does not interfere in politics save where politics touches the Church and tries to hinder her work. It is Red politicians who are constantly interfering with religion, not vice versa.
III. ALL YOUR PRETENDED WORKS OF CHARITY, YOUR ORPHANAGES, DISPENSARIES, ETC., ARE MERELY FOR PROPAGANDA PURPOSES, TO WIN THE FAVOUR OF THE POOR.
A. It is because the Church, like Christ, pities the sick, the poor, the orphans. etc.. that she helps them. Some of these show themselves ungrateful, others grateful. A comparatively small percentage of the latter appreciate our religion enough to ask to join it ; but no one is forced to do so, and the same care is given to those who don't as to those who do. The Church does not let any of them die of neglect just because they don't want to become Catholics.
IV. CHILDREN BELONG TO THE STATE. PARENTS HAVE NO RIGHT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM TO TEACH THEM RELIGION AND PRAYERS.
A. It is not the Party, or the State, but the parents, who begot the children. Parents thus have a natural right and duty to teach their little ones to be good, to honour God and their parents, to obey the just laws of the State. A child left to himself will not wash often, nor clean his teeth, or dress neatly. Parents must teach him these things while he is young. They must also teach him religion. How can the State. while proclaiming religious freedom, rightfully take away the religious liberty of the child, as it so often does, and make him attack religion '.
V. THE CHURCH IS IMPERIALISTIC AND AIDS THE IMPERIALIST POWERS. PRIESTS ARE "RUNNING DOGS" OF IMPERIALISM AND ARE ALL WAYS SPYING FOR IT.
A. The only imperialism the Church seeks to spread is the supernatural "imperialism" of the Son of God. For what country is the Church supposed to be working? The missionaries belong to dozens of different nationalities, most of them of countries which have no colonies at all in the Orient and do not want any. It is rather Communists who seem to be the "running dogs" of Russian imperialism.
VI. THE CHURCH WITH ITS LARGE SCHOOLS, WELFARE HOMES, HOSPITALS, CHURCH BUILDINGS, ETC., IS AN INSTITUTION OF LANDLORDS.
A. These buildings do not belong to individual priests or nuns, but were meant for and are used for the people. When one superior goes, he cannot sell these buildings and pocket the money for himself; but another superior comes in to administer these institutions for the public welfare.
VII. THE CHURCH IS NOT DEMOCRATIC. ITS LEADERS ARE NOT CHOSEN BY THE PEOPLE.
A. A family is not a democracy. Children do not elect their parents. Neither is the ordinary school or business a democracy-- teachers and managers are usually appointed. Democracy is a political term referring to one of many legitimate forms of government. As the Church is not a political system, there is no reason why it should have to be a democracy. The apostles were chosen by Christ directly. so was Peter, and placed by Him at their head. Though Peter was not elected, the successor of Judas was. So is the Pope elected by the Cardinals. Is the one-party Red political system a real democracy?
VIII. THE CHURCH HAS ORPHANAGES WHERE IMPERIALIST NUNS SPEND THEIR TIME IN TORTURING LITTLE CHILDREN.
A. The work of nuns is too well known and highly respected throughout the world for anyone to believe these ridiculous charges. The aim of the Reds in making these charges was merely to try to discredit the Wonderful work of Christian charity.
IX. THE CHURCH ORGANISED THE LEGION OF MARY, A SECRET SOCIEY, WHOSE ACTIVITIES ARE DIRECTED AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT.
A. The Legion was organised long before the Reds came, and was not directed against any government at all, for it is a spiritual organisation. If the Red government did not insist on interfering with the purely spiritual activities of the Legion, there would be no conflict at all between them.
X. THR0UGH ITS SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES, CULTURAL CENTERS AND ITS ENTIRE TEACHING, THE CHURCH IMPOSED ITS EUROPEAN CULTURE ON CHINA SO AS TO ENSLAVE THE PEOPLE.
A. Even before the Reds came, the number of Church schools in China was insignificant compared to the number of government schools. No one was forced to attend Church schools. But many well-educated Chinese used to send their children to mission schools so they would learn about western culture. The Catholic Church has always respected the traditional culture Of China.
The question is, do the Communists, with their Moscow ideas, do so? Our western culture was never imposed on the Chinese; the non Chinese Soviet culture is.
XI. THE CHURCH HAS NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN, FOR COMMUNISM ALLOWS RELIGIOUS FREEDOM.
A. It does in theory, but not for very long in practise. The record in every country where it takes over is the same- persecution, confiscation of schools, then most churches and institutions of charity. imprisonment of bishops, priests, nuns and good laypeople. This is not accidental' 'Marxism must mercilessly oppose religion," said Lenin. "Communism and religion cannot stand together; no compromise is possible between them."
XII. CATHOLICS ARE UNPATRIOTIC. THEY OBEY OUTSIDE AUTHORITIES INSTEAD OF THOSE BELONGING TO THEIR OWN COUNTRY.
A. Catholics take no political orders from outside; but Red leaders do - from Moscow, Pictures of Lenin, Marx and Stalin are found everywhere in China today. When did these Europeans become Chinese? Our Fourth Commandment obliges all Catholics to love, their Fatherland. But Communism calls itself political internationalism and has no real regard for national frontiers. Is that patriotism, or just the opposite?
XIII. WHY ARE CATHOLICS OPPOSED TO THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC CHURCH IF THEY ARE SO PATRIOTIC?
A. The Red National Catholic Church demands that local Catholics cut all ties with Rome, so as to have "self government," "self support" and "self propagation" of the faith. But the deceitful aim of the Reds is to cut our Church off from the universal Church and its Head in the Vatican, so they can destroy it more easily.
Since the Church is not a political, but a spiritual organization. it is no contradiction for a Catholic to love his country as a good citizen should, and at the same time belong to an international spiritual organization. Why should Communists object to this idea, since they also belong to an outside organization, the International, with headquarters in Moscow?
XIV. ALL FOREIGNERS ARE IMPERIALISTS AND SHOULD BE SENT AWAY.
A. If all foreigners are imperialists, why are Red Russian political agents not sent away? They are promoting Soviet imperialism, with its capital at Moscow. Christ was not an Occidental, but an Oriental. His doctrine is no more foreign to China than it is to France, or England, or America. It was meant for all mankind, as the sun is meant for all. And as for foreign doctrine, that of Marx, Lenin and Stalin is certainly not Chinese at all, but the Reds impose it on everyone.
XV. I BELIEVE ONLY WHAT I SEE. I HAVE NEVER SEEN GOD, THE SOUL, HEAVEN AND HELL, SO I DON'T BELIEVE IN THEM.
A. There are many, even material things, that one cannot see, e.g., the wind, X-rays, etc. And have you seen your great grandfather's great grandfather? If not, according to you, he did not exist. Many Reds who have never seen Stalin do not doubt his existence.
XVI. THE CHURCH DECEIVES PEOPLE WITH ITS FALSE DOCTRINES ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF THE WORLD, THE CREATION OF MAN, ETC. SCIENCE GIVES THE CORRECT ANSWER ON THESE QUESTIONS
A. Physical science has nothing whatsoever to say, scientifically, about the origins of the world, or the creation of the world. It can only weigh, measure and deal with the physical data it actually finds present in the world. The question of origin belongs to philosophy and religion. Many of the greatest scientists. like Lavoisier, Becquerel, Pasteur. Ampere, Galvani, Volta, Marconi, Fabre, Carrel, etc., etc.. have been religious men, Catholics who knew the limitations of their scientific field. Top scientists like Mendel and Lemaitre were ordained to the priesthood.
In order to fight the Communist effectively we must know his tactics and the stock arguments he uses against us. The Catholic should not forget that Reds are ready to employ every kind of lie and deceit to create illusions and sow dissension along Catholics. The experience of other countries shows that compromise, weakness, timidity, never succeed against the Reds. A most shining example of successful resistance has been given, e.g. in Shanghai where the faithful were forewarned against Communism and have not shown the slightest fear in combatting it, exposing its hypocrisies and answering its objections as soon as they were proposed. They knew what to expect and prepared themselves in advance. Their example can well be a guide and an inspiration for Malaya and other countries in South East Asia.
