SINGAPORE – Two sides of the belfry tower at Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour (OLPS) are now decorated with icons of Jesus and Mary. Jesus’ icon is on the side facing the main gate, and Mary’s is on the side facing the priest’s house.

There is a sweet little story behind these images.

The icon of Jesus was first donated to Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Upper Serangoon, where Father Augustine Tay served before coming to OLPS. However, it was not installed. So Father Augustine proposed to the donor to install it at OLPS. The donor agreed.

When the donor visited OLPS and Father Augustine during last Chinese New Year, she was very pleased to see the Jesus icon installed. She, however, lamented that the adjacent wall was bare and, to complement the "picture", she offered, on the spot, to donate another icon – that of Mother Mary. That cost her another $30,000!

But no one is complaining – and the icon of Mary befits the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. n Parish Link
